Motorola Pager Programming Interface Adapter

Motorola Pager Programming Adapter

I have found a very simple and cheap interface to program some Motorola and Unication pager models.
I have found that a Yaesu VX-5 VX-6 VX-2 cable works great. I have an older serial cable, but it works fine with a USB > Serial adapter. Most cables now are USB, but I would bet that they should work fine. You can find these on Ebay for about $10.

On my model, the Black wire is Ground, White Wire is Data Positive.
On the pager, the bottom pin hole (closest to battery) is Ground, Top Pin hole is Data Positive.

This has been tested on the following models. These models use a 2 wire programming interface.

  • Motorola Advisor Gold  – POCSAG A03QWB5962AA (596 Product Family)
  • Motorola Advisor Elite – FLEX A05CMB5812AA (PF56AFLX Software)
  • Motorola Advisor Gold – Flex A05UWB5862AA
  • Unication Alpha Elite Flex

Software is available from these sources.

Gratiot County Mi Fire Pager Tones

I will be gathering all of the tones as I hear them and am able to record / decode them .

Clinton County Mi Fire Pager Tones

minitorV

These are the Fire and EMS Pager tones for Clinton County Mi. on 154.220Mhz

I will correspond the dept with the tones, as I discover them. I grabbed these during the weekly tone test. They are a combination of Motorola and Plectron tones.

Tower #2 Site Survey

Close up of site from the road.

I was approved on getting a new tower site yesterday. This site is in the middle of my town, Merrill Mi. It is a very old grain mill. I went to inspect it today. I had to sign a liability release waiver for this site, which isnt too unusual, but after checking out the site, I now understand why. Its old, rickety, creepy and feels almost unsafe. I wasnt able to get to the top of the tower, since it was so windy, and I will need some more safety gear. My climbing harness isnt enough, Ill need some ropes too. I hope to do another site survey next week.

I plan to put up a Ham Radio POCSAG VHF + UHF paging system and some scanner feeds at this location.

Midland Co Sheriff + Fire
Midland City Police + Fire
Bay County PD + FD

I might be able to do feeds for
Arenac Co and Gladwin Co also, but I will have to get more scanners

Below are some pics that I took at the site. Quality is poor, since there is no working electricity in the building for lights.

Twitter Pager

Visiplex POCSAG Ham Radio Pager

I have been playing with some POCSAG paging systems, setup on Ham Radio frequencies lately. I wanted a way to get Tweets from a few accounts on Twitter, sent to my pager, instead of my phone. I already get tons of Tweets sent to my phone, and I wanted a way to tell them apart. I want Emergency / Fire pages sent to the pager.

Modding the WaveWare PGE-112 Paging Encoder

WaveWare PGE-112

This will help you wire the WaveWare PGE-112 Paging Encoder up to your own radio, to use for POCSAG paging.
If you plan to use your own unit on our Ham Paging network, then you will need to modify it with the following instructions, to be able to interface it to your own VHF radio.

WaveWare PGE-112 Wiring

WaveWare PGE-112

Wiring guide for the WaveWare PGE-112 POCSAG Paging Encoder / Transmitter.
It is supposed to come with a “Y” harness that goes to the encoder/transmitter, computer and power adapter. The power adapter is a 10volt, 1.5amp. It looks like a laptop power supply. If you are removing the transmitter, you could probably power the encoder part with a 9volt wall wart at 300-500ma. I would add a diode and 220uf capacitor to filter their nasty voltage ripple. I am going to be trying mine with a 7808 8volt regulator transistor

Arduino Fire Pager Encoder

Arduino Fire Tone Encoder

I got my new Arduino it in the mail today and started playing with it.
My 1st project making a encoder that could send the 2-Tone audio to alert Fire Dept voice pagers, if there ever was an emergency and the fire dispatch tower went down. An ARES or RACES group working with the EOC or 911 dispatch center could easily implement this backup type paging encoder.

Ham Radio POCSAG encoder

WaveWare PGE-112

I ordered a POCSAG Paging transmitter and receiver system Ebay from a seller back a few months ago and have been playing with it on/off for a while. My idea is to setup a Ham Radio Paging system. The idea isnt new at all. Lots of ham operators have been wanting to do it for a while and I keep hearing about small projects and tests popping up here and there,m but never anything fully running and operational. I would love to see more Hams get involved in it. Its a really neat mode of operation and has tons of possibilities.

The unit I got was a commercial band UHF Transmitter. Ive been testing it with a UHF stubby dummy-load type antenna.
The unit was made by WaveWare and I dont think its made or sold anymore. Its sad, since the POCSAG encoder board inside is really useful for my needs.

My idea is to pull the transmitter from the unit and use my own VHF transmitter. This will allow me to use the freq that I want and use higher power. I have an older Alinco VHF mobile radio and also use an external high power amp.  I will post updates once its setup and working on the new radio.
